Heaviest PSC Box Girder to be installed in High-Speed Rail Corridor
The 40 meter span PSC box girder weighs approximately 970 metric tons, which will be the heaviest PSC box girder in the construction industry of India. 40 m span girder is being cast as single piece i.e. without any construction joints, consisting of 390 m3 concrete and 42 metric tonnes of steel.
To expedite the construction of the viaduct, the substructure and superstructure have been constructed in parallel. The work of substructure i.e. pile, pile cap, pier and pier cap is in progress. For superstructures, a casting yard with alignment has been developed to cast full span girders and segmental girders so that they can be launched using heavy machines on cast pier caps.
Full span girder is preferred over segmental girder.
Most of the girders for the superstructure will be of full span of 30, 35 and 40 meters. However, for those places where the site is lacking. Segmental launching of precast segments will be used. Full span girder is preferred over segmental girder as full span girder launching progress is seven times faster than segmental girder launching.
23 casting yards being developed
23 casting yards are being developed along with alignment for casting of girders. Each casting yard is spread over an area of 16 to 93 acres as per requirement and is located adjacent to high-speed rail alignment. Facilities like jigs for making rebar cages, hydraulically operated pre-fabricated molds with hydraulically operated pre-fabricated moulds, batching plant, aggregate stacking area, cement silo, quality laboratory and workman camp for speedy casting of girders with quality have been developed.
Bridge launching gantry to launch 3-4 box girders
The full span pre-cast box girders will be launched using heavy machinery like straddle carrier, bridge launching gantry, girder transporter and launching gantry. To ensure continuous supply of girders for launching, the casting of box girders will be done in advance at the casting yard and will be stacked in a systematic manner.
The straddle carrier will lift the box girder from the stacking yard and feed it to the bridge launching gantry, which will raise the box girder and place the girder over the bearings on the pier cap. The bridge launching gantry will first launch 3-4 box girders on which the girder transporter will be placed and the launching of the girders will continue in a sequential manner using the girder transporter and launching gantry.
The casting yard and heavy machinery for launching are planned in such a way as to meet the peak requirement of about 300 full span box girder casting and launching, which is about 12 kms of superstructure casting and erection in a month. Is equal.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project (MAHSR) is 508 km long. Out of 508 km, 352 km is located in the state of Gujarat (348 km) and Dadra and Nagar Haveli (4 km) and the remaining 156 km is in the state of Maharashtra. M/s L&T is the executive agency for the length of 325 km, out of 352 km. They have been given the contract for two packages i.e. C4 (237Km) and C6 (88Km).
